Emerging from the ever-fertile musical fields of Berlin, Zukunft is the latest example of the German capital’s tendency for producing bands determined to avoid convention and push boundaries. The group’s name literally means “Future”, cracking a sarcastic smirk against their musical ideology, which draws heavily from a rich history of German experimental music and favors improvisation and unpredictability over pop structures or hierarchies. The groups expanded lineup is amorphous, featuring an international assemblage of some of Berlin’s finest players, while at its nucleus spins the yin and yang of multi-instrumentalists Mikey Sykes and Adrian Bang. Out of all this spills sounds that land somewhere between the meditative drive of NEU!, the street wise churn of the Velvet Underground, and incalculability of electric Miles Davis.
There’s western telecaster twang against motorik grooves or pastoral acoustic guitars versus synthesized landscapes. With tongue placed firmly in cheek, the group calls it Krautrock, but it’s just Zukunft, whoever they are that day. The only thing certain is change.
